MES (Manufacturing Execution System) FAQ Intro
Find answers common questions about our MES solution—how it helps track production in real time, improve shop floor efficiency, and maintain quality. Learn how MES supports better visibility and control across your operations.
What value does ECI MES provide to manufacturers?
ECI MES combines advanced scheduling with machine monitoring, real-time production insights, and analytics to maximize productivity and efficiency on your factory floor. It seamlessly connects your existing ECI manufacturing ERP with over 140 industrial devices, collecting data in real time to help you:
- Minimize downtime and manage constraints by automating scheduling based on real-time conditions
- Improve short- and long-term planning with full visibility into operations, equipment performance, labor, and productivity
- Drive continuous improvement by quickly identifying, flagging, and resolving issues
- Keep teams aligned, avoid conflicts, and optimize workforce management by coordinating schedules across multiple facilities
What is the difference between MES and APS?
APS (Advanced Planning and Scheduling) focuses on planning and optimizing the schedule, especially in complex, multi-constraint environments. MES (Manufacturing Execution System) adds an additional layer for executing and monitoring the schedule in real-time. This includes APS, machine integration, operator interaction, and shop floor data collection.
Is MES available for both cloud and on-premises systems?
MES is currently offered only in the cloud for JobBOSS² and M1, requiring your ERP system to also be cloud-based. Deacom can be cloud-based or on-premises. Our Macola product does not have a cloud-based option.
How is MES licensed?
MES licensing is based on the number of named resources (operators and machines) being managed (i.e. planned , tracked, automated, analyzed and optimized). The exact licensing details and package options are best discussed with your account representative. They can provide the most accurate information for your specific ERP and needs.
Will implementation disrupt my operations?
Implementation is designed to be non-disruptive to existing operations, occurring in the background to augment your current processes. Once the solution is implemented, tested, and ready, it can be transitioned into production, which typically takes a few weeks to a few months, depending on the complexity of the integrations.
How can my team access MES?
Because MES is supplementary to the ERP, user access is managed separately by the system administrator, who can grant access to a broad range of roles. For example, administrator roles will have access to the interface for setup and configuration, while supervisor roles can be configured to allow for review and approval of shop floor data entries, as well as other individual operations, before they are finalized in MES. Once a user has been granted access, they can access MES through any web browser.
How does MES improve data collection?
MES replaces your ERP’s built-in data collection tools, providing a significantly improved data collection environment that effortlessly captures data from employees and machines. Employees can report information without interrupting the job.
How does MES track production quantities without requiring manual input from operators?
MES automatically tracks production quantities by directly connecting to the machine's PLC or controller. MES receives real-time data from the machine, including piece counts, without requiring manual data entry by the operator. As the machine produces parts, MES dynamically receives and records those counts.
Will MES benefit shops that are more reliant on human labor versus machines?
MES benefits job-shop (labor oriented), batch processing (mix of labor and machine oriented) and production line (machine oriented) environments.
