How Moxon Industries Transformed With M1 ERP

video

A smarter, leaner, and more scalable future

Moxon Industries is a second-generation, Australian-owned engineering business delivering high-precision components across rail, mining, defence, food, and pharmaceuticals. With a reputation for safety-critical work and a vision to expand beyond Sydney into Queensland and Victoria, growth was essential.

But outdated systems made it nearly impossible. With MYOB for accounting, Excel spreadsheets for scheduling, and paper job cards for tracking, operations were fragmented. Quoting was slow, production visibility was patchy, and managers often had to carry critical details in their heads.

“Driving a car in a storm at night with no headlights or dashboard—that was our business before M1.”

Sam Matandos, Moxon Owner

Implementation: Building the foundation for growth

When Moxon committed to quadrupling turnover, leadership knew they needed a system that could support efficiency, visibility, and control. The decision to implement M1 wasn’t just about digitising processes, but about rethinking how the business worked. Leadership treated it as a chance to document best practices, embed accountability, and create a foundation for growth.

“Implementation probably took from October and then we decided to go live in January. We went through the videos, wrote our own procedures, and then I’d come back and pretty much play in the system to work out how we would implement it as a business,” said Rachel Auterson, Executive Assistant and M1 Superuser.

She explained that the initial rollout covered basics such as job cards and invoicing, but over time the team customised features to fit their workflows. Adjustments like tailoring welding procedures or creating clearer job travellers helped improve efficiency on the floor.

“The team at ECI were awesome. Nothing was a hassle, nothing was too far out of the scope that they wouldn’t help us with. They supported you from day dot, and you weren’t left high and dry.”

This collaborative approach helped staff move from hesitancy to advocacy, as they quickly saw the value of real-time data and structured processes.

“Especially in quoting, we can be confident that we've got the right price for our jobs.”

Mark Riddell, Sales & Production Support Manager

Operational control on the shop floor

Before M1, scheduling was managed in Excel, with critical knowledge stored in people’s heads. Supervisors had to chase information manually, and errors were common. With M1, the shop floor gained live visibility, enabling faster, more accurate decisions.

“The system we had in place prior to M1 was a scheduling system that was on an Excel spreadsheet, basically,” said Mark Riddell, Sales & Production Support Manager. “You had to hold a lot of information in your head.”

Now, instead of juggling dozens of active jobs from memory, Mark can instantly check where each part is in production and give customers clear, data-backed updates. The system has lightened his workload and improved customer trust.

“We're not running blind. We know what's happening at every given moment. We're in total control of our business. And without M1, I would say that would be impossible.”

Mark Diacono, General Manager

Accurate quoting and estimating

“I can call the job analysis sheet up at any given time, and I can go, okay. Did we make any money on this job? Did we quote it effectively? And were we efficient in executing the parts,” said Mark Diacono, General Manager. “We may have quoted fifteen hours to manufacture this job. Then the next time that customer orders that part, we know that there’s a cost savings there to be had. We can then offer that cost savings.”

“We're currently at 300% improvement on our labour hours. We're upwards of about a thousand percent improvement from taking a job from a quote to an order.”

Results that speak for themselves

The improvements across Moxon were immediate and measurable:

  • 300% improvement in labour hours
  • 1000% faster turnaround from quote to order
  • 80% revenue growth with only a 20% increase in admin headcount
  • Multi-site readiness and expansion into Queensland and Victoria

With greater visibility, managers no longer waste hours searching inboxes or paper files. Instead, they enter meetings with real-time data that enables faster and more informed decision-making.

“The speed of us preparing a quote is now at the point where it’s at least twice as fast as what we were doing before manually. The biggest surprise that I had was how the hell did our business even run.”

“You can have the equipment, you can have the people to do the work, but you've got to have the traceability that sits behind every single part that you've manufactured or overhauled.”

Sam Matandos, Moxon Owner

Built for the next generation

Moxon now views M1 as more than an ERP system — it’s a cornerstone of their long-term strategy. The platform’s flexibility supports everything from jobbing shops to production runs, while its traceability ensures compliance in safety-critical industries.

"You could pick up any other job and tap into M1—all that history, it's all available literally at the click of a button," Sam explained.
